From clients

What people say.

I generally hate photos of myself but I did actually really like a couple of the ones he took of me! And he did help make it a bit less scary by being so nice!!

Kitty Artistic exploration

I had such a great time. He provided a comfortable environment and we were able to collaborate on the creative process of the photos. Super happy with how the pictures came out!

Lydia Personal session

I'm based across both Urbana-Champaign and Lafayette, Indiana, so I know what "portrait photographer in the Midwest" can mean: open fields, golden light, soft focus. It's a perfectly good genre. It's just not what I do.

What I do starts before the camera comes out. A portrait should have a reason — not a brief necessarily, but a sense of what it's for and who it's of. We work that out together, then find the location and light that fits it.

Good for

UIUC faculty, Illini, and the rest of Urbana-Champaign

University towns produce a particular kind of portrait need: researchers who need something for their academic profile, students with a portfolio to build or a milestone to mark, faculty who've put off getting a proper portrait for years.

I know that brief. You need something that looks like you actually wanted to be photographed — not like you got cornered between a poster and a whiteboard. We can make that.

Outside the university: Urbana and Champaign have families, small businesses, and individuals who want portraits made with some care. Same work, same approach.

Questions

A few things people ask

What actually happens in a session? Do I need to prepare anything?

We have a conversation first — about what you're after, what the photos are for, what kind of location might fit. If you have a clear vision, it's worth thinking about outfits ahead of time; some people bring a couple of options. If you don't have a specific look in mind, that's fine too — wear what you'd wear. I'll direct enough to keep things moving without making it feel staged.

How long until I get my portraits?

Usually within two weeks of the session. I'll send a link to your edited portraits as a private gallery — high-resolution files, yours to download and keep.

Where do sessions in Urbana-Champaign take place?

Wherever fits the portrait — the UIUC campus, downtown Champaign, Urbana's older residential streets, spots around the Boneyard Creek. We work it out together based on what you're after. If you have somewhere in mind, say so.

I'm UIUC faculty or staff — which session makes sense for a profile portrait?

The Essential session (one hour, five edited portraits) covers most academic profile needs. We'd talk beforehand about what the portrait is for and what register it needs to hit.
